Royal wedding Barbie dolls: a fitting tribute to Wills and Kate?

Been there, done that, got the… Barbie doll
If you thought that the tacky souvenirs from last year’s royal wedding were all gone, you can think again!
To mark the one year anniversary of Kate and Wills tying the knot, world-famous toy makers Mattel have today announced that its plastic figurines of the royal couple are now available to pre-order for an eye-watering £99.99.
What does this say about our obsession with the young royal couple? Obviously there is a market out there for such products; however I somehow cannot see even the most diehard monarchists forking out nearly £100 for two plastic dolls - even if Kate and William are our very own Barbie and Action Man.
Ultimately, these dolls represent a PR stunt designed to reinvigorate a once beloved children’s past time which has been lost to the ever expanding digital market.
Personally, I believe dolls need to be reclaimed from the ‘collectors’ had handed back to who they belong – children. However, by creating extortionately expensive Kate and William figurines, Mattel are keeping these toys away from the people who would enjoy them the most.
So, when it comes to another royal wedding souvenir, I think I will stick to my tea-towels.
